Standing Cypress (Ipomopsis rubra), also known as Texas Plume or Scarlet Gilia, is a striking native wildflower that produces tall spires covered in brilliant red, tubular blooms. Flowering from early to late summer, the vivid blossoms attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators in abundance.
In its first year, the plant forms a low rosette of finely cut, fern-like foliage. In its second year, it sends up dramatic flower spikes reaching 3–6 feet tall, creating a bold vertical accent in gardens and naturalized landscapes.
This drought-tolerant biennial thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, especially sandy or rocky sites. It is ideal for prairie plantings, native gardens, wildflower meadows, and xeriscaping.
