It prefers full sun to partial shade and grows best in moist to average, well-drained soil. Mature plants typically reach 3–6 feet in height and bloom from early to mid-summer with large, bright yellow flowers. This species is native to eastern North America and is hardy in USDA zones 4–8.
Seeds benefit from cold stratification and are best fall-sown outdoors or stratified before spring planting. Germination can be slow, but established plants are long lived and dependable.
