Pickerel Weed (Pontederia cordata) is a native aquatic perennial adapted to ponds, marshes, and wetlands. It prefers full sun to partial shade and grows best in shallow water or consistently saturated soil, typically in water depths of up to 12 inches. Mature plants reach 2–4 feet in height and bloom in early to mid-summer with spikes of blue-violet flowers. This species is native throughout much of North America and is hardy in USDA zones 3–10.
Seeds benefit from cold stratification and should be kept moist during germination. They are best sown in containers submerged in shallow water or directly in saturated soil. Once established, plants return reliably each year.
